William P. Mullen is the 53rd Sheriff of Allegheny County. He currently serves over the 1.2 million citizens of Allegheny County. Before the 2007 special election, Mullen served as Acting Sheriff upon the resignation of Peter DeFazio in the fall of 2006.
Mullen graduated from South Catholic High School in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, and then the University of Dayton, where he earned his bachelors degree in Political Science. He would continue his education in Quantica, Virginia at the FBI National Academy, John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard and the Disaster Management School in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
In 1969, Mullen would join the Pittsburgh Police department as a police officer. In his 37 years with the force, Mullen would be promoted through the ranks as Narcotics Detective, Lieutenant in charge of homicide, Zone Commander, Assistant Chief of Operations, Assistant Chief of Investigations and Deputy Chief.
While working for the Pittsburgh Police, Mullen was responsible for the management and supervision of all City investigations involving major crimes such as homicide, rape, robbery, burglary and narcotics. He was further accountable for the daily oversight and administration of the City’s six police zones, as well as, the officers assigned to those zones.
Since becoming the Sheriff of Allegheny County, Mullen has made great strides in improving the efficiency of the Sheriff’s Office. Here is a list of the Sheriff's Office's accomplishments during his first term.
Sheriff Mullen resides in the Banksville area of Pittsburgh with his wife, Judy and has two grown sons, Brendan and Conor.
