PITTSBURGH, PA) – Based upon the suggestion of Deputy Sheriff and former Marine James Klingensmith, Allegheny County Sheriff William Mullen announced the establishment of a program to collect donations of law enforcement expired body armor for our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. The expired vests are used under the flak jackets of the soldiers, and as lining for the inside of military vehicles.
Sheriff Mullen has asked his deputies to donate their used or expired vests, and is sending the word out to our law enforcement community convinced that many officers and their departments will respond with their spare or expired vests that are no longer used, but that are crucial to our troops, many of whom are underequipped.
Our local Marine Corps representatives have graciously offered to ship the donated body armor to our service men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office will serve as a collection point for law enforcement agencies willing to donate their used body armor. Any officer or department that would like to make a donation should contact the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office for more information or to make arrangements for the collection of the equipment.
Not only are the donations a great way to help our troops, but it also lets them know we are thinking about them and are grateful for their service.
